President Sally introduced members of Jack Magee’s family (his wife Nancy and son Bill) and presented a resolution, prepared by Julie Keesling, honoring the memory of Jack Magee, and describing his many accomplishments, including his distinguished Navy career and his long-standing recognition as the best “Rotary recruiter’ in our club, and in all of district 7600.  Several Rotarians, including Will King, also offered personal remembrances and tributes to Jack.  Speaking for the family, Jack’s son, Bill, thanked the club and offered a few words of encouragement towards the importance of our recruiting the next generation of Rotarians from the ranks of the Millennials. 

 

 

Chip Finch introduced our speaker, Beau Turner.  Beau is an architect by training but a builder/innovator by choice and passion and is founder of the 757 Makerspace.  As Chip described him, “He is an Innovator, Teacher, and Maker.”

 

Beau described 757 Makerspace, located at 421 West 22^nd Street, Norfolk, as a community workshop and prototyping center — “a gym for innovators.” It attracts, assists and trains people who are innovators, creators and “makers” utilizing different skill sets including carpentry, electrical, woodworking, welding and computer graphics and design, to name just a few. All that is required is an open mind and a desire to learn. The center has programs for children as well as adults.

 

A couple of examples described by Beau included the creation of a circuit board for restaurants to reduce waste from refrigeration equipment outages, and the creation of a better, safer pool filter. He also described how 3D printing was bringing greater efficiency to planning and designing new products and enabling the development of new ideas with products or concrete solutions.

 

Tours of the Makerspace are on Thursdays at noon and 6 p.m. and Saturdays at 3 p.m.

 

 

President Sally called the meeting to order and called upon Lynne Berg to lead us in singing. After the Pledge of Allegiance, Bob Powell offered our invocation. Marty Raiss introduced our guests, including Ben Mason’s daughter, Reilly, prospective members Dan Schaffer and Jamie Wright, and visiting Rotarian, Bill Huger.

Our speaker was honored by the Club’s donation of a book in his name to the School of the Week, Ocean View Elementary School. Will King won the weekly drawing and left the Queen in the deck for another day!
