Ken Trinder, CEO of EOS Surfaces, provided at our May 17 meeting a tutorial on an amazing new compound called "biocidal copper"!  Did you know that one out of every five hospital patients will acquire an unwanted infection?  It's a real worrisome problem, one not addressed by regular hand-washing. Trinder's company has acquired patents for innovative uses of biocidal copper in such things as plastic table and counter tops, hospital bed frames, and bed linens; all items that have long been identified as convectors of hospital associated infections. Trinder spends his energies introducing the use of "preventive biocidal surfaces" into hospitals and medical institutions.  The products have been well-accepted and are already in general use in over thirty nationwide medical institutions, with an immediate effect on what are commonly known as 'hospital acquired infections.'

 

Trinder was commended for his innovative entrepreneurial efforts, and was awarded (via Oceanair Elementary - our honored, School-of-the-week) what we hope was a sanitized, copper-enhanced, paper-back, children’s book. 

 

After several days of gloomy, gray weather, it was good to see the sunshine in so many Rotary faces!

 

To add to the joy, our enthusiastic choir leaders, Bob Heely and Pam Tubbs, lifted us to our feet with several rousing "old favorites" (They're all 'old favorites', aren't they?), concluding with that old Brexit standby, "God Save The Queen"!  And just to prove that we're still patriotic Americans, our Prez led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

 

Following a little sliding and scraping of chairs, Rotarian Walt Sobczyk came forward to offer a thoughtful Invocation.  Then it was Marty Raiss' turn to read off the guest list - including Mal Branch, who had the honor of presenting Dan Schaffer of Fink's Jewelers, our newest member, who has a long history in the local jewelry business.  He returned to his seat with a 'riddle' challenging him to identify, as part of his induction, a 'mystery member'! Good luck on that, Dan.  And I'm sure Mal will help!!!

 

Our President was effusive in her comments extolling the recent Botanical Gardens adventure - naming all of the Suds & Buds sub-chairmen who did such a fine job.  Special attention was paid to co-chairs Lisa Chandler & Lorna Cochrane, inseparable twins, whose overview and guidance made it all happen.  Little do they know that they're now in contention for the coveted positions of 'permanent' co-chairmen. (You heard it here first, Folks!)

 

All that aside...we learned of yet another chance to serve the region (and maybe get your feet wet!) on Saturday, June 4th, when we cooperate with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation in the annual 'Clean The Bay Day' event.  It's a 9:00 'til Noon event and a great opportunity to expand your sun tan.  You have another volunteer opportunity on sunday, June 12 at Harborfest when we will staff a beverage tent and earn funds for our charities. Shifts are available between 11:30 a.m. And 6:15 p.m.

 

Steve Jones, the poor man's Sam Snead, would like to see all of you at our annual Golf Outing, Saturday, May 21st, at the beautiful Bay Creek Course on the Eastern Shore. It's a great sports outing, followed by a convivial clubhouse dinner.  Tee-off starts at 11:00 AM.  Call steve at 627 7672, to  register.

 

"Who do you know" is a clever label for a new program encouraging our members to be more proactive in the recruitment of newer ( and younger!) members.  Pick up one of the new business cards and use it to facilitate your invitation to the prospect to join us for a club lunch.  And, while you're at it, pick up one of those stylish, blue, Rotary baseball caps.  You'll be glad you did!

 

Then there was a heart-warming pitch for Rotary Foundation.  Let your motto be "EREY" (Every Rotarian Every Year)  Speaking of heart-warming...Don't forget to congratulate Jim O'Brien on 45 years married to a very patient woman!
