Bob Heely was the Rotarian of the Day. He is a retired banker and past club president who spent time in development at Westminster-Canterbury before final retirement.

 

Bob explained the history of the Club’s work with Norfolk High School Students during Career Visitation Day where students shadow Rotarians to learn about individual careers. As always, Bob included interesting and sometimes humorous essays about selected Rotarians, but he also indicated that the level of professionalism has risen in the papers. He mentioned Rotarians Ed Ware, Bill Davis, Bob Ash, Ed Lilly, David Brandt, Chip Vogan, Jim O’Brien, Michael Desplaines, Bruce Wilcox, Marty Raiss, Joe Massey and Edna Baehre-Kolovani as being among the club members who spent time showing students career options. 

 

Students who won the $50 gift certificates for their winning essays were: Joshua Johnson (Maury High School) who visited Sentara Norfolk General and EVMS with Ed Lilly; Shakira Harris (Booker T Washington High School) who visited a child psychologist by introduction of Marty Raiss;  Precious Wheeler (Booker T Washington High School) who was given a tour of TCC’s Culinary  School with Dr. Jeffrey Boyd by introduction of Edna Baehre-Kolovani; and Jakob Morgan who shadowed Joe Massey both behind the scenes and on the Bench. Jakob’s essay was so laudatory of Joe that he felt compelled to reward him with a cash payment!

 

The Meeting:  President Sally rang the bell a bit early due to the unusual number of guests, mostly from Norfolk Public High Schools. We observed a moment of silence to mark the passing of long time member Frank Price. After some robust singing led by Eleanor Schoonover and the Pledge of Allegiance, Win Lewis gave the invocation. The school of the week was Larchmont Elementary.

 

Visitation Report: Jean Owens gave the visitation report with the happy news that Walt Sobczyk was in attendance, having walked with the help of a walker while he keeps weight off the injured leg. Bob Latimer was reported to be feeling poorly and not in attendance.

 

Visitors: Alan Nelson introduced our 35 guests -- possibly a record. Among them were a video team from Norfolk Public Schools. Others were educators, including school Superintendent Dr. Melinda Boone, school board member Dr. Noelle Gabriel and Susan Burge, who heads the district's English programs. 

 

Guests included Assistant District Governor Nancy Joslin on probably her last official visit to our Club, Dean Thomasson’s guest Richard Gillcrese (who came as guest of Stephen Jones last week and couldn’t stay away), Kevin and Denise Stevens who are looking for a Club to join as a couple and who were Nancy's guests, Lush Heely who came with Bob to enjoy Heeley’s highlights and Lucille Sobczyk who is looking after Walt (proving that a mother’s job is never done!)

 

President Sally noted that she received a note from Angus Hines who wintering in Florida. Angus was noting his 55^th anniversary as a Rotarian. Angus just gets better with age!

 

President Sally also noted the passing of Louise Lester, wife of former Rotarian Dick Lester.

President Sally announced the meeting schedule for the month is unusual because there is no meeting March 8 due to a basketball tournament at Scope but there will be one on March 15 and 22. She also reviewed the outing schedule, including one to EVMS on March 8, as well as thanked members who hosted last week at the Rockefeller (Kelly Stefanko) and at the Portsmouth Colored Community Library Museum (Dr. Steve Jones).  See the Club website for a complete list of upcoming outings.
