The Program

When Bob Ash handed the microphone to Judge Charles Poston, members knew they were in for something special. Judge Poston introduced our speaker of the day, Dr. Katherine Rowe, President of William & Mary, describing her as a dynamic champion of the liberal arts and a driving force behind the university’s globally recognized Entrepreneurship Hub, which creates pathways to student success. Rowe also has deep ties to W&M athletics, stemming from her experience coaching a Frisbee team. She is married to Bruce, affectionately known on campus as the “First Gentleman,” and together they have two adult children.

After introducing her Chief of Staff, Carlane Pittman-Hampton, Rowe welcomed alumni, parents, and grandparents of W&M students, calling them part of a community of “nice geeks” — bright, service-minded young people who embody the university’s values.

Now in its 333rd academic year, William & Mary is the first university in the United States and the second-oldest college. Like Rotary, it emphasizes respect and compassion as cornerstones of service.

Rowe highlighted a transformative $100 million gift from Jane Batten establishing the Batten School of Coastal & Marine Sciences, focused on coastlines, flood forecasting, and sea level rise. 

She spoke passionately about internships, the Better Arguments Program, and respecting disagreements, leaving Rotarians with one clear takeaway: never underestimate the competence and compassion of today’s students.

The Meeting

After a warm welcome by President Dave Duncan, September birthdays and anniversaries 

Joe New presented the invocation and President Dave shared the following announcements:
